Kratom is derived from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa plant, which is a tree species in the coffee family — available mostly in Southeast Asia. Kratom is used in traditional medicine, with the leaves removed from the stringy central vein and eventually, chewed fresh by the patient. The leaves are quite bitter, but it can be remedied with a little sweetener. For those who cannot take the botanical directly, the best kratom leaves are then, dried and crushed to powder form.

Just like certain medicines, taking kratom before you eat is the best way to do it. If there’s food present in your stomach, it could hinder the accuracy of your body’s absorption of kratom. Given this, you won’t be able to fully maximize kratom’s benefits. On the other hand, the absorption of kratom is quicker when you take it on an empty stomach.

Using kratom on an empty stomach doesn’t mean you should not eat the entire day. Once you had your kratom dose, wait for 1-2 hours before taking your usual meals. The benefits tend to show effect, 15 to 30 minutes after taking kratom, but could be shorter for stronger strains.

Tip: For the complete duration of the kratom’s benefits, it is suggested to have smaller meal portions. Wait for at least 3 hours after eating, if you’re taking a stronger kratom variety.

Kratom and Food/Liquid Combination

For some people, the bitter taste and even the texture of kratom are bothersome to be taken directly. While it is not discouraged for you to introduce kratom into your food or drink, do expect that the benefits would take effect later than usual. Moreover, do think twice about upping the dosage, especially if you’re taking a stronger kratom strain. Just because you’re combining the kratom into your food and drink doesn’t mean the effects would be reduced or watered down.

Whether you’ve taken kratom with or without food or drink, it does not affect the duration of the botanical’s benefits. Usually, the effects of kratom last 5 to 6 hours once you feel it. You’ll feel you’re in an affective state once the kratom kicks in. This is why it is loved by regulars who needed something to lift their mood or ease physical pain due to an ailment.

Risks When Taking Kratom

For first-timers, it is recommended to take kratom on an empty stomach. If you are not familiar with your sensitivity to kratom, it is always best to go with the mildest variety, before experimenting with a stronger strain. This way, you can take note of any reactions that would be uncomfortable to you. If you’re experiencing severe and prolonged vomiting when on a particular strain, for example, stop taking it immediately, and consult a herbalist doctor for remedy.
